Biotechnology is the technology based on biology, especially when used in agriculture, food science and medicine. It affects almost all the sphere of human life. It is an interdisciplinary science encompassing biology as well as physics, chemistry, mathematics and engineering. In Medicine, it has helped in improving accuracy of diagnosis and treatment of disease and in the synthesis of new and improved drugs. The productions of nutrition foods, enzymes for its preservation, are just some of the contributions of biotechnology to the processed food industry. In agriculture it has helped in eradicating crop diseases, improving the quality of food production and livestock. Biotechnology has also explored new sources of energy, new methods of pollution control and handling waste in hygienic manner. The creation of Dolly, the cloned lamb, has revolutionised the field of genetic engineering followed by many luminous achievements related in the field of new and vast developing CLONING.

Courses & Eligibility

The different types of Biotechnology Courses and their eligibilities are as follows:

1. BSc. Biotechnology
Eligibility: 10+2/Equivalent Examination with PCB
Duration : 3 Years

2. MSc. Biotechnology
Eligibility: Graduation in Agriculture, Biotechnology, Medicine, Life Sciences, Genetics, Pharmacy, Microbiology, Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, Chemical Technology, Food Technology, Human Biology, Veterinary Science etc.
Duration : 2 Years

3. B Tech. Biotechnology
Eligibility: 10+2/Equivalent Examination with PCM.
Duration : 4 Years
The course is presently offered at Anna University, Chennai & Jadavpur University, Calcutta

4. M Tech Biotechnology
Eligibility: 10+2/Equivalent Examination with PCM.
Duration : 4 Years
The course is presently offered at AIIMS, Delhi , Jadavpur University, Calcutta & Anna University, Chennai.

5. Integrated M Tech in Biotechnology
Eligibility: 10+2/Equivalent Examination with PCM.
Duration : 5 Years
Selection: Admission to Integrated M Tech is based on Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) conducted by the IITs.
The course is presently offered at IIT, Delhi & IIT, Kharagpur
Job Opportunities

Many opportunities are available in drug and pharmaceutical research, public funded laboratories, chemicals, environment control, waste management, energy, agriculture, animal Husbandry, food processing and bio-process industries. Most biotechnologists find employment on a large scale in research laboratories run by the government of India. Industries dealing with tracking new energy sources like CNG and finding new methods of waste management also require the assistance of biotechnologists.
